Shillong, Feb 5: After six days after he was abducted by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, thirty nine years old coal exporter Naga M Sangma,younger brother of Meghalaya legislator Samuel Sangma, was released on Wednesday after allegedly paying Rs 20 lakhs as ransom.
The GNLA militants had abducted Naga, a coal exporter to Bangladesh, on January 30 nights from his house at Gasuapara in South Garo hills.
South Garo hills SP Davies R Marak said that Naga was released unharmed Wednesday morning between 0100 and 0200 hours in South Garo hills district.He said, “We came to learnt that he (Naga) has reached his house at Gausapara early this morning after he was released unharmed in a forested areas between Chokpot and Gasuapara area.”
Marak, however, said the police are not aware if ransom amount was paid by his relatives to secure the release of Naga. But an intelligence official claimed that the hostage was released after the GNLA was paid a ransom of Rs.20 lakh.
The family members of Naga also denied paying the ransom demanded by the Garo rebels. Several militant groups operating in Garo hills have served extortion notes on petrol pump owners, coal dealers and businessmen in the coal-rich districts of the Garo hills.- By Our Reporter
