TURA, AUG 18: Two militants of the newly formed Achik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) caught by the Assam police on Saturday managed to escape from police lockup this morning.
The two militants William Sangma andJiten Lyngdoh were able to give the police a slip from within the Mendhipathar police station , when an unarmed battalion constable opened the lock up door without any precaution. The two overpowered the policeman escaped.

Sangma and Lyngdoh were caught on Saturday by the Assam police near Agia in Goalpara and were handed over to the North Garo hills police late last evening. They escaped from police custody at about 7:20 am Monday morning.
According to police sources, Marak was requested by the two arrested cadres for water to go to the latrine, but when the lock up was opened to provide the water, they pushed him aside and ran away.
According to North Garo Hills SP JFK Marak, “The two were handed over to us yesterday and had been in the Mendipathar police station, where interrogation was on. This morning the sentry on duty, without any precaution opened the lock up door after which they managed to escape. Action is being taken against the UBC for criminal conspiracy and he has been arrested under the same clause”.
Marak informed that normally precaution would be taken and armed constables should have been there to guard the two. “They were wanted hardcore criminals and all precaution should have been taken and we are yet to understand why he opened the door without taking precautions”, added Marak.
The two militants ran into a crowded locality of Mendipathar before police could react and from the information the police got the two run back to Assam.
Sangma, the chief of the new outfit had been involved in a spree of kidnappings cases in the Tura – Dalu road and came into prominence because of a botched attempt to kidnap a police personnel Abhijit Mazumdar and his friend Soumendu Chakraborty.
Earlier, William’s brother and another member from the same group had been arrested from a night bus from near Mawiong. They had confessed to an attempt to kidnap Mazumdar and Chakraborty. – From Our Correspondent
