SHILLONG, MAR 12: Independent legislator John K Leslee Sangma said that “Militancy has become like an industry in Garo hills where anyone with small arms can start extorting money that has become a matter of serious of concern.” Participating during the debate on the Governor’s address during the on going assembly session, Sangma said the growth of militancy with many militant outfits operating in the different areas of Garo hills it has led to sense of insecurity in the minds of the people of the Garo hills region.
Sangma complained, “As an MLA, I am supposed to feel safe, but today the situation is such that even if I wanted to take my family and kids for a picnic, I have to think twice because of sense of insecurity.”

Referring to recent statement made by police that the growth of militancy is due to easy availability of arms into the region, Sangma said, “I wonder why we are not taking deterrent steps to control the inflow of illegal arms to Garo hills.”
Sangma felt that the need of the hour is for everyone to come together and understand the ground reality and find out ways and means to overcome this menace inflicting the society.-By Our Reporter
