SHILLONG, AUG 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said his government is committed to find a permanent solution to the long pending boundary dispute with Assam.
“Yes, it is our endeavour to ensure that we complete the rest of the (remaining) six locations as well as the surveys that have to be done so that we can find a permanent solution to this problem so that none of the different kind of problems that public faces in the border areas will not be faced by them in the future,” Sangma told reporters on Tuesday.
“Regarding the talks with Assam CM, I understand that peoples’ desires and expectations are high as for the last 45 years, this subject was never taken up in a serious manner. But this is first time, this government has given importance to the border issue and finally, we have come to an MoU in the first six locations,” he said.
He informed that in the next coming days, the state governments will be able to make a visit to the areas of difference.
According to him, the regional committees of the two States headed by Pijush Hazarika and Sniawbhalang Dhar will be visiting Khanduli if not on August 16, then on August 17.
“Like that we are continuing the process. We have to remember that these are very complicated matters. We would like to find quick solutions to it but that is not how things work. We need to really ensure that we take everybody on board, discuss with all stakeholders and find an amicable solution to the problem,” he asserted.
Regarding the Mukroh firing incident where six people were killed during a firing by the Assam police, the chief minister said the government is putting stress on the judicial commission and inquiry is going on.
“It will continue to happen till we finally get the final report on it,” he added.
