Meghalaya dancing troupes demand institution

Shillong, Oct 29: After several attempts to get the attention of the chief minister Mukul Sangma, the All Meghalaya Dancers Association (AMDA) finally hand over a memorandum seeking the state government’s  initiative to set up a dancing institution for promoting the talented youth through teaching and training.

The memorandum, signed by AMDA president Kitbok Thabah and general secretary Diana Khyriem, pointed to the fact that although there are many talented boys and girls who are adept in dancing, a proper institution for further “developing the technique as well as preserving the culture of the people of the state” is not there.

The huge delegation consisting of twenty dancing groups from various parts of the state, including Ri-Bhoi district and Jaiñtia Hills district expressed their happiness at having been able to submit the memorandum.

Speaking to www.ohmeghalaya.com, Thabah said, “We have seek appointment with the CM on several occasions but never received any response, therefore, we have decided to come with so many in numbers, and we are happy that our memorandum has been submitted. We hope the response from our chief minister will be positive.”

Beside demand for setting up of a dancing institution, AMDA also seek financial assistance and sponsorship for various competitions and proposed a Board of Government Association to help talented dancers financially through different projects and programs.

The other proposal of AMDA is that the state government includes dancing in the syllabus as one of the subjects ofHigherSecondary School.

AMDA is a registered organization with more than one hundred members, some of who have participated in various competitions like the Dance India Dance, as well as other traditional and modern dancing competitions in and outside the state. By Our Reporter
