The Mawphrew village with tremendous growth potential to produce pineapple in large quantity was recently declared as Pineapple Village in a solemn function held in the village. The village was anointed with the title in the presence of Meghalaya agriculture principal secretary P Kharkongor and other officials.

Kharkongor said the village can become a model village in the production of pineapple just like the  Sohliya village which is known for producing strawberry. He pointed out that Mawphrew can even become a major tourist spot as the village is located close to Nongpoh and  it is quite certain that many tourists would love to visit the pineapple village.

Kharkongor informed that the state has the capacity to produce ninety thousand to one lakh  tons of pineapple annually.

The horticulture department director DJW Ingty said Meghalaya now needs to improve the production of the pineapple to give a competitive market to the villagers who are producing pineapple since decades.

One of the interesting aspects of the village is that the farmers have adopted organic method of producing products from their own tradition and this would give lot of earning opportunities to the people since people now always demands organic products.

Former headman of the village Anthony Maring informed that  the people in the village are producing pineapple since 1974-75 and with the village now getting the tag of Pineapple Village, he is only hoping that it will bring new fortunes to the villagers who are largely dependent on production of apple for their livelihood. – By Our Reporter
