SHILLONG, FEB 15: Five villages headmen under Mawlai constituency on Thursday decided to donate land free of cost located at Mawsiatkhnam for the construction of newly created Mawlai C&RD Block office. The decision was taken by the five Dorbar Shnong of Mawsiatkhnam, Umrynjah, Madan Mawkhar, Nongkohlew and Umprew under the banner of the Synjuk Ki San Durbar Shnong Mawlai Constituency (SSDSMC).
The village heads led by Congress Mawlai MDC PT Sawkmie also submitted a letter to the Director of the Community & Rural Development (C&RD) department on Wednesday.
The proposed land at Mawsiatkhnam village is just only 5 kilometers away from Mawlai area.
The decision was taken at a time when the state government is still in the process of finalizing the land for the construction of the block office in after growing demand that the same should be located within Mawlai area.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Sawkmie said that the delegation had also told the director of the C&RD department that the land will be given as per requirement for the purpose and accordingly land documents would be handover after inspection.
When asked, the Congress MDC said, “The proposed land will be as standby if the state government finds it difficult to get land within Mawlai area,” adding “This is to ensure that the block office will be within Mawlai constituency and not outside.”
On the other hand, Synjuk chairman J Majaw, also headman of Mawsiatkhnam said that the SSDSMC supports the demand for the block office to be in Mawlai area.
“However, as a dorbar Shnong we are also ready to welcome the setting up of the block office in our village by giving land free of cost,” he said while adding there has already been a delay for nearly one year.
He also said if the department finds that the proposed village land is not feasible, he is also ready to give his own land for the purpose. “This is because we do not want the office to be located outside the constituency,” Majaw added.
