SHILLONG, MAY 15: Former MLA and former editor Manas Chaudhuri on Wednesday termed the allegation of land-grab hurled at him as cheap and politically-motivated gimmick to finish his political career.
Chaudhuri admitted that the land in Rilbong that he and his family are alleged to have been occupying illegally does not belong to them, but they have been living there for the past six decades as tenants. “To say that we are unauthorized occupants of the land is wrong and baseless when we have proof to show the receipts of payment made (to the government as tenants),” he told reporters here.
The Greater Laban Community Development Society (GLCDS) had on Tuesday asked the state government to take back the evacuee landed property with two holdings – No 36 and 39 and re-number 46 and 47 – situated at Rilbong within Kench’s Trace that has been under the possession of the Chaudhuris for several decades, and from where they has been operating business of profit by allegedly hoodwinking the government.
Chaudhuri admitted that land was an evacuee property and his family has been staying there as tenants. It was only after the government served a notice to the family to vacate the property in 1994 that he approached the court, and the case has since been lying pending.
Terming the GLCDS allegation as “politically-motivated and cheap gimmick to finish me politically”, the former MLA dared anybody to prove him wrong on the matter. “I will no longer take part in public life (if proven wrong),” he said, while stressing that he would respect the court verdict on the matter as and when it comes.
