SHILLONG, JULY 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) today maintained that it would continue to demand the implementation of the Inner Liner Permit (ILP) to regulate influx into the state.
“The Union will continue to demand for ILP,” KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar told reporters after a meeting convened by the state government with the 13 pressure groups to discuss on the comprehensive mechanism here in the city.
He said that the KSU since the beginning before deciding to propose the implementation of the comprehensive mechanism had maintained that the demand of the ILP will continue.
“It does not mean we have given up our demand for ILP once such comprehensive mechanisms are in place,” Marngar said.
Echoing similar views, HNYF general secretary Sadon K Blah said that by proposing implementation of the comprehensive mechanism it doesn’t mean that they have abandoned the demand for ILP.
“However, we will see how effective the comprehensive mechanism to deal with the issue of influx is,” he said.
With regards to the recent statement made by the HYC that the comprehensive mechanism cannot help in tackling the issue related to influx, Blah however said no man-made law is perfect.
“If there is need, we will ensure the comprehensive mechanism is further fine tuned,” he added.
When asked whether the pressure groups succumbed to the alleged delay tactics of the government to implement the comprehensive mechanisms, former KSU president Daniel Khyriem admitted that there was a delay on the part of the government.
He however said that some issues related to land acquisition for setting up of entry/exit points also caused hurdles to its progress.
“We told the government that we do not want to hear only updates, but we want action in the ground,” Khyriem said.
On the assurance of the government, he said that the 13 pressure groups hoped that the state government will speed up the implementation of the rules of the Meghalaya Resident, Safety and Security Act before August 15.
