Shillong, August 4: Following the ethnic clash in Assam, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) intensified its drive to stop influx from the neighbouring state by making a surprise check early Saturday morning in Lawsohtun and rounded about nineteen labourers which it handed over to the Rilbong police station.
These labourers could not produce any document to support their stay in the locality. They were working in private construction sites.
However, Helen Dkhar, a resident of Lawsohtun Block IV who employs several non-tribal labourers felt the union should have given more time for the labourers to verify papers.
“Although the KSU is doing the right thing however, they should have given more time to the labourers to produce their documents,” she told this reporter.
Justifying its stand on the drive to check migrant workers, KSU Lawsohtun Unit general secretary Reavion Nongrum alleged that on several occasions the local residents had been physically assaulted.
“For unknown reasons these labourers would attack some local residents and flee, but we could not catch them. Therefore, we have to take measures to stop such cases.” Nongrum said.
