SHILLONG, JUNE 4: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) expressed its concern over the plight of the Khasi inhabitants of Borokompi Khasi Punji, Barak Valley in Assam. On Wednesday, miscreants destroyed the areca nuts and betel leaf plantations (belonging to the Khasis) following a misunderstanding that erupted between them and the Hmar inhabitants of Rengma Punji allegedly due to certain land disputes.
“We expressed our resentment over the threats issued to the Khasi community by certain groups operating in Barak Valley, Assam,” KSU central body Education Secretary Donald V Thabah said in a statement issued on Thursday.
He also said, the union urges upon the inhabitants of Rengma Village to abstain from encroaching the cultivable lands located in Borokompi Khasi Punji as these lands belong to the Khasis of the said village since 1944 as per valid documents possess by the Khasis of Borokompi KP.
The KSU also assured to support the Khasis living Borokompi Khasi Punji in whatever form necessary whenever they required at any time or place as the union believes that a community is like one living entity and if any part of that entity is hurt then the whole entity will ache.
“The Union would like to convey upon both the Khasis and Hmars of Barak Valley, Assam to settle the current misunderstanding and any other problems that might cropped up in the near future amicably so that the brotherhood that exist among the two communities since time immemorial whether in Assam or in other states such as Meghalaya and Mizoram is maintained,” Thabah said. The union also requested both groups to refrain from issuing threats as such actions might increase the insecurity that is prevailing currently.-– By Our Reporter
