SHILLONG, MAR 20:  The Khasi Students Union (KSU) on Thursday celebrated its 36th anniversary even as it reaffirmed its commitment to protect and preserve the identity of the indigenous tribal community and the land.

“Till today, our stand is firm on the need to immediately implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to curb the inflow of illegal influx into the state,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said while addressing the gathering near the All India Radio.

Khyreim said the KSU has not back out from the issue of ILP even after the four months agitations.

Stating that the KSU is committed to protect the identity of the tribal population in the state, Khyriem said, “We urged and appeal to the people of the state to extend their support and cooperation to the union in its struggle to ensure that the demand is achieved.”

KSU’s former presidents Paul Lyngdoh, Michael Syiem, and Samuel B Jyrwa were among the other members who attend the anniversary celebration in front of the monument of the union.

Paul Lyngdoh, who is also a legislator, said that the KSU in its 36 years of journey has been able to produce many leaders who have contributed to the cause of the state’s interest and welfare.

“Many leaders have come and gone but the KSU till today is still standing strong in its ideology and principle which cannot be taken away from the hearts of the members even after they are no longer with the union,” Lyngdoh said.

Lyngdoh further urged the members of the union to be strong enough to face the various challenges that comes on its way in their fight to protect the people and their land.

In his speech, Michael Syiem said, “The KSU is like shield which defends the land and the sword to fight against enemies of the land.”

Syiem however urged the members not to discriminate other communities but to ensure that other communities do not discriminate the indigenous people and their land.- By Our Reporter
