SHILLONG, SEPT 9: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) demanded the resignation of chief minister Mukul Sangma and also for placing the report of the High Level Committee on Influx (HCLI) before the state cabinet.“We demand that the report of the HLCI be placed before the state cabinet for its final decision whether or not to go ahead with the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state,” KHNAM working president Adilbert Nongrum said soon after the hunger strike protest.
The HLCI headed by the then deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong had last year submitted its report to the state government recommending implementation of the Inner Line Permit.
Nongrum accused chief minister Mukul Sangma of taking all the decision himself without placing the HLCI report in the cabinet for its approval. He said, “We strongly condemned this dictatorship attitude adopted by the chief minister on the issue. He should know that he cannot alone take decision on matters pertaining to the state.”
Nongrum said the ILP is not being implemented because of lack of political will and demanded Sangma immediate resignation. He said, “Sangma should step down and make way for other capable persons who are sensitive enough towards the issues concerning the state to take on the mantle of chief minister.”
Nongrum, however, also added that the party welcomes the other mechanisms proposed by the state government to thwart illegal influx into the state but on condition that the ILP issue should not be deviated. – By Our Reporter
