SHILLONG, FEB 29: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Monday said it will write to the state government for immediate withdrawing of the notification on amendment of the Meghalaya Services (Conduct) Rules, 1950, which direct government servants to furnish information on holding office in community based organization and traditional body.
Replying to a motion moved by UDP leader Teinwell Dkhar during the budget session on Monday, EM in-charge Elaka Lamphrang Blah said, “We have decided to write to the state government demanding it to immediately denotify the said notification with regards to the service rules on government servants.”
Stating that the post of the headman is purely voluntary in nature, Blah said, “It is also totally not illegal for government servants to hold the post of headman.”
He also alleged that the recent decision of the state government to come up with such amendment of the Service Rules is aimed at bulldozing the headmen who are also government employees.
“There is no logic for the government to direct the government employees to seek its approval for holding the post of headman when their role is purely voluntary,” Blah said while reminding the government of the important role of the headmen in term of implementing various government schemes.
Blah further informed that the KHADC is also trying its best to find out ways and means to protect and strengthen the traditional institutions and their heads from being bulldozed by the state government.-By Our Reporter
