KHADC not to issue NOC for roads

SHILLONG, AUG 1: Succumbing to the pressure of the anti-uranium groups, the Congress led PDF in the KHADC on Monday decided not to issue NOC for construction of the 43km road from Nongstoin to Wahkaji in South West Khasi Hills region.

The road projects undertaken by the UCIL is being viewed as an attempt to mine uranium and facilitate easy access to the uranium reach areas of the district Several ngos have been opposing uranium mining as they felt it will endanger the .health of the people.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem hailed the ‘bold decision‘ of the KHADC.

KHADC instead decided to earmark Rs 20 crore out of the Rs 133.12 crore special assistance grant sanctioned by the Centre, for repairing the two existing single roads which include Nongstoin-Rangblang-Wahkaji-Domiasiat and Mawthabah-Wahkaji-Phlangdiloin-Ranikor

The decision was taken at a meeting convened by the ruling People’s Democratic Front (PDF) in the KHADC with various ngos who are ‘for’ and ‘against’ the construction of two-lane road projects in the district held on Monday.

The anti-uranium and anti-road groups were represented by leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) and Joint Action Committee of Social Organizations (JACSO), which comprises of nine NGOs, while the pro-road projects was represented by Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Two-Laning from Nongstoin-Wahkaji-Mawthabah and Wahkaji-Phlangdiloin-Ranikor-Bagmara roads, during the meeting.

The meeting was also attended by all MDCs of the ruling PDF and also opposition MDCs of the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) – Teilinia Thangkhiew and Pyniaid Sing Syiem.-By Our Reporter
