Youth Cong to hold polls

SHILLONG, JAN 31: For the first time the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) claims that organisational elections in the IYC will be held after its membership drive in Meghalaya and the entire country. The IYC is targeting to reach out to the youth of the state and enroll them into the party’s fold.

Youth Congress Election Commissioner Jai Shankar Pathak said that holding of organizational election in the IYC will not only be historic for the party, but also for the political parties in India as no political parties have held internal party elections.

Describing the decision of holding internal elections of the IYC as historic, Pathak said this is the vision of the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi who is in-charge of the youth’s wing of the party.

Regarding the membership drive of the party, Pathak told a news conference on Friday that youths between the age group of 18 to 35 years in Meghalaya is the party’s target and those who believes in the leadership and philosophy of the Congress party will naturally be the party priority first.

Pathak said that at present the total strength of the youth Congress in Meghalaya stands at 35, 000 members.   He informed that the membership drive has already started since Thursday and will be completed by February 26. After that, he added, the membership forms will be processed for scrutiny for youth Congress in Meghalaya to enter the elections for the second time.

Pathask said India is now witnessing dawn of of a new era when young political leaders of the party would be directly elected by its members, he said, “The change in the political system of electing leaders rather than nominating them is a historic development in the politics of India. This will be true democracy in action.”

Pathak said that the organizational elections will be held in all the booths of the youth Congress in the state, he informed that this is an attempt of the party to build the youth Congress from the grassroots level in every corner of the state and eventually in the entire country.

Pathak said that only through this type of elections that the real leaders can be identified. Leaders who have not risen through a transparent and democratic process cannot be expected to represent the real aspirations and needs of the largest and youngest democracy of the world, he added.

Informing further of the process, Pathak said after the membership drives, voter lists will be created and the election process for the IYC organization office bearers at the booth level will commence which  will be followed by elections for office bearers at the assembly constituency level, the Lok Sabha level and the state level.

Pathak also said that there will be orientation and training sessions to educate potential candidates about the elections, nomination process and how to become an elected leader from their areas and also how to go about to get into the Indian Youth Congress, including the highest office.- By Our Reporter

Every scheduled for enrolment, elections in Meghalaya were not informed to Booth Level Committees and AYC Committees at the appropriate time….for rural areas are not possible if it is not consulted or with the concern of the grassroot committee……. Hope higher authority will consider the suggestion from the common people and always to top brass dictate……
