SHILLONG, MARCH 8: The third edition of SusCon, the annual international conference on sustainability, organised by IIM Shillong concluded here on Friday. The three day conference with a central theme of “ecology, economy and ethics” was inaugurated on March 6.
Among the dignitaries present at the inaugural function included former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, professor emeritus of Copenhagen Business School Peter Pruzan and IIM Shillong director Keya Sengupta.
A packed house heard in rapt silence Dr. Kalam’s take on sustainability. The Bharat Ratna shared his thoughts and ideas on what he believes to be sustainable development, integrating every strata of the society. He talked of India aiming to bring sustainable development through rural and urban infrastructure, quality education, health care, vibrant public institutions for better and enhanced delivery of essential public services on time, reformed financial system for better global integration and a proactive regulatory system.
A total of 17 research papers were presented in the conference. Around 150 participants, including 35 delegates from across the globe, attended the three-day annual event.
The second day of the conference saw myriad facets of the subject discussed. Eminent personalities from different walks of life presented their thoughts on the various aspects of sustainability: ecology, economy and ethics. The day was filled with interesting and stimulating discussions and left food for thought for one and all present.
The valedictory function for the event was presided over by Christoph Stückelberger from the University Of Basel, Switzerland. Stückelberger spoke on the importance of a holistic approach towards sustainability which would also cover the spiritual and cultural dimensions of it.
The third edition of SusCon was sponsored by NEEPCO, MAX Cement, UCO Bank and Dept of Forest and Environment, government of Meghalaya. The event was co-sponsored by SBI, BSNL, HP and Meghalaya Co-Op Apex Bank.
The third edition of the event proved to be a landmark of sorts with the former President of India giving his consent to teach the students of IIM Shillong as a visiting faculty on the subject of societal transformation with technology and its application. The event was a huge success and was instrumental in promoting awareness towards the critical concept of sustainability. (By Our Reporter)
