SHILLONG, JAN 2: Villagers along with the members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) recently repaired the dilapidated Mawiong Sung road, about 10 kilometers from Mawryngkneng village in East Khasi hills district.

The decision to repair the road was taken after the failure of the state government and its PWD department for as long as 60 years which affected the residents.

During the meeting organized before the repair work started village head Kalwel Sohtun expressed concern over the lack of development and backwardness of the village.

He said, “Even after 60 years, the village is yet to get proper road connectivity which has become a major problem for the people especially in times of emergency where many precious lives have lost simple because they could not be reached on time to a hospital due to the deplorable road condition.”

HYC Mawryngkneng circle vice president Robinson Nongrum lamented at the attitude of the state government for failing to include the Mawiong Sung road under the list of the PWD (roads) department.

In addition to this, the HYC president Riskhembha Kharkamni blamed the public representatives – MLA and MDC from the area besides the village head for failure to get the road repaired. He said, “They have failed to notice the problems faced by the people living in the area.”

Stating that road is the backbone of any development, he said the Mawiong Sung is a very fertile land and at the same time it is a land where a unique flower known as ‘Jakhei’ used to bloom once in every 12 years.

2015, is the year for the flower to bloom again and this will attract many tourist from across the globe, he said adding that with poor road connectivity it will be impossible as well as an embarrassment to invite tourists to the village.

“The absent of proper road has also affected the people of the village, especially those who are engage in selling their agricultural products,” he said while urging the state government and the authority concerned to consider doing the needful in the interest of the people and the village.- By Our Reporter
