SHILLONG, NOV 9: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Monday demanded Inspector General of Police (Operation) GHP Raju apology for allegedly making what they called as ‘wild accusation’ against the organization.
“We demand the IGP GHP Raju to tender a public apology for accusing the organization without having any evidence,” HYC president Peter Lawai told reporters at a press conference on Monday.
Lawai was reacting to the recent statement made by the senior police officer in which he had stated that “eight to ten members of the HYC have been identified as the main trouble makers” during a rally called by the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) on November 5.
Terming the allegation as a design to tarnish the image the HYC, Lawai said, “There was no direction given from the council to its members that they should attend the peaceful rally which took an ugly turn on that day.”
According to him, the same goes to the PWD department where some of the engineers were caught pelting stone and this doesn’t mean that they have been directed by the department.
“Even if they (members) have attended, they have participated at the rally not as members of the HYC but as residents of their respective villages and localities,” he said adding “To say that the HYC had instigated the crowd is totally false and baseless.”
He added, “The HYC has no pre-plan motive as alleged by the IGP.”
Lawai further stated that it is a shame for the senior police officer to alleged that most of the crowd have attended the rally in an intoxicated state.
“We want to ask him (IGP) whether he has enough prove such medical reports to conclude that they are really drunk,” Lawai said.
Reminding that the day (November 5) was also declared as a ‘dry day’, the leader said the question arises if they are drunk, from where did they get to buy alcohol.
“Therefore, the Deputy Commissioner is requested to take action by filing FIR against the Excise department and the police department for their failure to check on such orders,” he said adding “The stone pelting incident is also a result of the failure of the police and the district administration.”
When asked, Lawai, however, said, “The HYC will not take responsibility against those (members) if they are found involved in the incident as we will not interfere with the course of the law.”
In addition, HYC Organizing Secretary Nickson Dohling said that the organization is shocked by the fact that the HYC has been single out by the police department.
“Usually what happen is that when somebody calls for a rally and if there are any untoward incidents, the organizers are to be blamed, but interestingly in this case, the IGP has straight away accused the HYC,” he said.-By Our Reporter
