Inaugurating the festival, James lauded the organizers for the meaningful Simsang Festival, to preserve the Simsang river and its catchment areas and also to showcase the local agri-horti products, local talents, etc. and informed that the Govt. is very keen to protect the catchment areas in the state.
With such kind of festivals in the state, the tourism sector is being made to boost up and tourism is one such sector which can solve the problem of unemployment, he said. He also informed that in order to develop tourism infrastructure, the Govt. made Rs. 100 crores budgetary allocation to tourism out of Rs. 22 crores had been allocated to East Garo Hills alone and sought the support and cooperation of the people in implementing the projects.
The guest of honour of the day, the Govt. Chief Whip and Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise N Marak, giving examples of tourist inflow to Sohra, sought the cooperation of the people in bring tourists to the region to witness such kind of festivals. He also informed that the Govt. had sanctioned funds for construction of eco-camps in East Garo Hills for facilitating the tourists.
The welcome address in the inaugural function was delivered by the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, L Ch Marak and the vote of thanks was proposed by Alloysius Ch Marak, ADC.
The others who spoke on the occasion included former Songsak MLA and co-chairman of MSPB, Nihim D Shira and GHADC Chairman, Denang T Sangma.
On the day, the chief guest of the festival distributed the PC tablets to the Class XII students of Loyola College, Greenyard Higher Secondary School, Mt. Penuel Higher Secondary School, Rongrenggre Govt. Higher Secondary School, Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Williamnagar Govt. Higher Secondary School and Ramsang College.
In the carnival, Matgrik Chadambe Club of Williamnagar and East Garo Hills Taekwondo Association bagged the first and second prize respectively, while the Fisheries Department and Upper Baija Club wre awarded the third and fourth prize respectively.
The highlights of the two-day extravaganza included the carnival, patriotic song presented by Jetro Momin who is dubbed as local Hamilton Momin, indigenous games and Mr. and Miss. Simsang festival contest on the day one and the cooking competition, songkristan competition and rock concert on the day two.
