SHILLONG, MAR 16: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that the issue of holding talks with the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has been taken up with the central government even as he emphasized the need for the banned outfit to stop its anti-national stand and eschew criminal activities.
Sangma told reporters on Monday, “They (HNLC) should demonstrate that they are not continuing with their anti-national stand.”
Stating that on number of occasion, HNLC has indicated that they are willing to come to the negotiating table and in this regard the state government made it clear the outfit needs to stop criminal activities besides stopping boycotting national celebration to create a conducive atmosphere for holding of talks.
Sangma, however, lamented that despite the expressed stand of the government the HNLC is continuing boycotting of national celebrations and if it wants to come to the negotiating table it must demonstrated it by creating a conducive environment for talks.
Sangma informed that the issue of negotiation with HNLC has been taken up with government of India.
Sangma said, “We will have to jointly decide because unlike any other militant outfits, the HNLC is a banned outfit and the duration of keeping under the purview as a banned organization is under process.”
Sangma said there are methodologies that need to be in conformed to the legal requirements which the state is bound to take. He informed that the state government is engaging with centre and is awaiting for its response on the talks issue with HNLC.- By Our Reporter
