Shillong, Sept 12: To commemorate the World First Aid Day, members of the free emergency service run by GVK-EMRI, also known as 108 today demonstrated first aid methods to members of the Shillong Press Club (SPC) Wednesday.
SPC president David Laitphlang said, “We travel the length and breadth of the state in pursue of news, especially accidents and emergency, so this demonstration is appropriate for us so that we can help save life also while disseminating information.”
Introducing the program, GVK-EMRI Marketin and Media Relations Officer Aurrelius Passah said the knowledge of first aid should become mandatory for everyone.
“Especially in the present scenario, where accidents, be it vehicle related, assault cases, fall from height, etc, where the victim can be saved during the golden period,” Passah said as he pointed out that sixty minutes from the time of occurrence of the accident if the witness to the accident has any first aid knowledge it could be life-saving.
The detailed demonstration with the help of mannequins was given by Ishbert Tham, a trainer at the GVK-EMRI.
The first aid demonstrations include how to protect the scene, prevent further accidents and minimize the risk for those rendering assistance, to summon help and report the accident to the emergency services, and give relevant information, to make an emergency removal of an injured person from the scene when necessary and possible.
Next was the demonstration on how to assess the physical state, check vital functions, consciousness, circulation, breathing as well as the physiological needs of those affected, to respond to visible bleeding, unconsciousness, breathing problems, and shock, and offer psychological support to enable the injured person to survive whilst awaiting the arrival of the emergency services.- By Our Reporter
