SHILLONF, FEB 20: The Meghalaya government has taken immediate steps to deploy adequate security and also ensure that every voter is able to cast their vote without any threat and intimidation so that all the citizens are able to cast their vote to choose their representative on February 23.
The decision to strengthen security and ensure that the voting day on February 23 is not sabotage by the proscribed HNLC, who had give a 36 hours bandh call starting from 6 pm on February 22 till 6 am on February 24, a high level meeting held was under the chairmanship of acting Meghalaya Chief Secretary Barkos Warjri on Wednesday.
The high level meeting was also attended by the Director General of Police, Principal Secretary, Home (Police), Chief Electoral Officer, Additional Director General of Police (SB) and Joint Director, SIB.
Though the security review meeting noted that the HNLC bandh call was yet to be verified, but it nonetheless decided to take immediate steps to deploy adequate security forces to foil any attempt to disrupt the voting on February 23.
The meeting also decided to call a meeting of all political parties on Thursday to discuss the HNLC boycott call and take appropriate steps.
A government release on Wednesday said that the State government is committed to ensure full security to every voter and will take every necessary step to ensure that every voter shall be able to exercise his/her democratic right in a free, fair and secure environment.
The meeting left it to the police department to make detail arrangements to respond to the bandh call and the district administration has also been instructed to follow the detailed security plan provided by the police department.
The government also appealed to all sections of the electorate to come out in large numbers on February 23 to exercise their franchise without fear and not heed the boycott call.
