SHILLONG, FEB 10: The Meghalaya Elementary Pre-Service Trained Teachers’ Association (MEPTTA) on Wednesday accused the Congress led state government of failing to conduct the teachers eligibility test (TET) exams as mandated by RTE Act and NCTE norms.
According to the association, the failure of the government has put the trained teachers who have completed the diploma in elementary education at the receiving end.
“The state government has failed to conduct the teachers’ eligibility test as mandated by the RTE Act and NCTE norms for the past two years,” MEPTTA president Kiewshaphrang Thabah told reporters on Wednesday.
He informed that there are around 1200 teachers who have undergone training under the DIETs of the state. Out of this, 900 of them have so far successfully completed the training.
“Such unnecessary delay has not only affect the trained teachers but to a great extent affected the students in the government schools, which most of them have recruited contract teachers, who have not completed the diploma training,” Thabah said.
He informed that the association had on December last year, met the chief minister Mukul Sangma to demand the government to immediately conduct the TET exams.
According to him, the demand was made after the centre had granted relaxation to the state government for implementing the TET as per RTE Act and NCTE till March 31, 2014.
“He (CM) had informed that the matter for conducting TET exams for recruitment and appointment of teachers have been approved by the cabinet since May last year. He also said that he had instructed the education minister concerned to speed up matter on this regard,” he said.
Thabah however said, “Unfortunately till today, there has been no sign from the part of the state government that it is serious to conduct this exam.”
He further informed, “The officials of the different departments under Education had informed that preparation for conducting the exams at their level have been completed but the delay is because the education minister has failed to issue the necessary go-ahead order to them.”
Blaming the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Education RC Laloo for the delay, MEPTTA president said, “We demand the government to come out clear whether there is anything behind this adamant attitude towards recruitment of teachers.”
“We highly suspect that there is something behind this delay despite the relaxation granted by the centre had already lapsed since two years ago,” he said.
Stating that the total number of trained teachers is equal to the vacancy posts in the different government elementary schools, he said, “We therefore, demand the state government to immediately conduct the TET exams.”
According to him, the association had also demanded the chief minister to ensure that the conduct of the TET exams should be completed before the start of new academic session.
“If the government fails, then what is the point of spending huge amount of money on the training of teachers by paying Rs 5000 as stipend per month? The training is meant to boost the human resources but if this is the attitude then it only tantamount to wastage of public money,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MEPTTA has threatened to resort to other ways and means to ensure that the government speed up the conduct of the TET exams in the state.-By Our Reporter
