SHILLONG, MAR 30: Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has expressed confidence that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police will be able to identify and arrest the culprits involved in the assault incident at Golflink area which led to the death of a youth from Wahkaji village recently.
The minister also maintained that criminals have no colour and no community.
Pherlangroi Myrthong (20) succumbed to his injuries at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on Sunday, a week after he along with his friends were assaulted at Golflink area on March 21.
No arrest has been made by the police so far.
“A crime is a crime and a criminal is a criminal…a criminal has no colour and has no community – the law is for all,” Rymbui told reporters on Tuesday.
His statement came in the wake of NGOs rejecting the claim of the state police that the culprits involved behind the assault case ‘belong to a tribal community of Meghalaya as per their language and accent’.
This was after the father of the deceased as well as the injured boy had maintained that the people behind the assault incident were speaking in Hindi, Nepali and Garo.
Rymbui said in any incident there will be some people who have their own agenda and who will try to give misinformation.
“However, it is duty of the law to see that any perpetrator of a crime is brought to book,” he said adding that he totally symphatized with the family of the deceased and condemned this act of violence.
“Having said that, it is not very easy for anybody to just arrest anybody we have to have a clue, we have to have some sort of proof before taking any action because whatever action we take it has to be substantiate, evidence should be there so that as and when prosecution and charge sheet have been filed, it should stand in the court of the law,” the minister said.
Stating that the police have done its duty and they will do more taking into cognizance of this case, Rymbui said the East Khasi Hills SP has immediately constituted the SIT to further investigate into this incident.
“I hope that the culprits will be nabbed as soon as possible,” he said while requesting those who have any knowledge or clue regarding this incident to inform the police so that necessary action could be taken at the earliest.
“I have already issued a strict instruction that we should take immediate action against any type of crime which happened in different parts of the state,” he stated.
Asked, Rymbui said usually timeframe given to complete the investigation is three months.
“I hope that with the help of the people around us may be we can crack the case at the earliest. Why we set up the SIT is because we are very serious and we do not want this type of crime to happen again and again so we try to ensure speedy investigation to nab the culprits,” he added.
Meanwhile, the minister also said that the state police will identify places across the state that are prone to crimes and take necessary action for the safety and security of the citizens of the state.
