SHILLONG, FEB 6: Since the attack and killing of two jail employees of the Williamnagar jail in East Garo hills district, the encounter between the police and outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants have increased with the latest taking place on Wednesday morning at Bolchugre village in Songsak where heavy exchange of fire took place between the security personnel and the militants.
The encounter took place at around 6 am.
The encounter took place after the sentry of the GNLA spotted the special squad of the SWAT and COBRA commandos approaching the village. Obviously the militants were in the village. On seeing the approaching security personnel, the militants fire on them.
The commandos retaliated. There was heavy exchange of fire between the commandos and the militants.
However after sometime the militants ran toward the jungle. Taking advantage of the thick forest, the militants disappeared.
Twodays ago the commandos had an encounter with the militants of the same group led by the Williamnagar area commander Jimmy and seven of his cadre members. After a brief exchange of fire, the militants gave the police the slip and disappeared into the jungle.
With the upcoming assembly election slated for February 23 and the recent attack on the Williamnagar jail, the district administration in East Garo hills has intensified patrolling. That is one of the reasons as to why there is frequent encounter between the security forces and the militants.- By Our Reporter
