Four arrested for assault

SHILLONG, AUG 16: Four villagers of Mawlyngbna were arrested by police for their alleged involvement in the attack and assault of farmers from Thyllaw village over a disputed land even as the dorbar shnong of Mawlyngbna termed the allegation as “baseless”.

“We have arrested four villagers from Mawlynbna village for their involvement in attacking the people of Thyllaw village,” East Khasi hills district SP M Kharkrang said.

The accused have been identified as Bling Kynter, Lostar Ramseij, Trsmonfar Tohtih and Pussingstar Pdahkaseij. All have been arrested on Friday and produced in court today.

Kharkhrang said, “The accused were also remanded to 14 days police custody and investigation into the case is on.”

On August 12, nine farmers including women were critically injured when they were attacked by a group of miscreants armed with lethal weapons while they were working in their paddy fields, a land which is under disputed at a remote village under Mawsynram.

Six women and three men of Thyllaw village were badly injured after they were attacked by a group of villagers from a neighbouring village of Mawbynna, Kharkrang said.

Meanwhile, the Dorbar of Mawlyngbna village under the  East Khasi hills district on Saturday categorically denied that their villagers had attacked the people of Thyllaw village.

The residents of Tyllaw village had earlier told newsmen that the assault was led by Klining Kharnaior Rangbah Shnong of Mawsyram village and Amos Malngiang Syiem (Chief) Mawsynram.

During a news conference on Saturday, Kharnaior said that the accusation against him that he had led the assault against the people of Tyllaw is condemnable and untrue because he was in not present in the village on that day as he attended a meeting at additional secretariat in Shillong.

Kharnaior also said that the FIR against the people of Mawlyngbna is baseless because one of the accused mentioned in the FIR filed by the villagers of Thyllaw, was a dead person – Don Pdakaseij whose dead certificate was also shown to the media.

According to Kharnaior till recently the farmers of Mawlyngbna and Tyllaw which are adjacent villages have been tilling in their own lands peacefully for many years. “It is due to some men and their selfish interest that poisoned the minds of the villagers that led to this awkward incident,” he said.

Kharnaior along with the other villagers and the farmers strongly condemned Bhanohsip Rynga, a member of Thyllaw village dorbar, and said that the accusation by him were fabricated and as a leader he should have tried to maintained peace among the two villages and not instigate.- By Our Reporter
