TURA, FEB 28: Meghalaya police on Sunday afternoon defused five IEDs, which were planted at a primary School in East Garo hills. Of the five IEDs, which were planted around the Adugre School campus, near Williamnagar, two of the IEDs were planted in the classroom.

“An IED weighing around 20 kgs was put inside a metal trunk and the other on a vessel put beneath the ground inside the classroom”, said GHP Raju, inspector general of police (operations).

An IED encased in a claymore box was also recovered from the school premises. “The IEDs were connected in a series by a wire, which was to be detonated by a battery”, informed Raju.

He told this correspondent that the entire operation was filmed.

Police have arrested a suspect in this connection, a civilian cadre of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Enison Ch. Momin, 34 alias Vodafone from Adugre village.

In the past four days, police have recovered 67 IEDs from different parts of Durama range in its operation Hailstorm – 3 launched to neutralize GNLA activities, which is on the rise in Garo hills.

In Friday’s operation at Pathalgre, commander-in-chief of the outfit Sohan D. Shira had managed to flee.

“Arrested GNLA cadre has confessed that Shira had instructed to plant these IEDs in the School premises as police invariably occupy school buildings for accommodation when they visit Adugre for operation”, said Raju.

Yesterday, two arms dealers were arrested from Baija locality of Williamnagar.

The outfit had recently expressed its willingness to come forward for peace talks. However, there activities are on the rise, which has forced the police to launch massive counter insurgency operations in the jungles of Garo hills.-From Our Correspondent
