FINS to suggest for integrated security policy to union govt

Shillong,Nov 23: The Forum for Integrated National Security (FINS) today said that it would soon submit its suggestions to the Government of India on the need to have a ‘comprehensive’ and ‘integrated’ National Security Policy to counter the various threats including ‘terrorism’ faced by India.

“We are taking up the matter with the Government of India to suggest for having a proper comprehensive and integrated National Security Police in place,” FINS National Secretary Shishadri Chari told reporters at a news conference at the Shillong Press Club Friday.

According to Chari, since independence India has failed to formulate a National Security policy in place which he feels has been the root-causes for many terror attacks in .  He said,  “National security is not confine only to threats by terrorism but it also to a great extent a threat to the economic, food and energy security.”

Despite of having a National Security Council in place, Chari however said, “India is still facing a number of terror attacks and problems of infiltration.”  He informed, “We are asking the government to have a preventive mechanism by having a policy to take proactive steps before problem erupts rather than having a national security council which only acts after the problems takes place.”

Pointing out that the reason for the government’s failure to have a national security policy is due to lack of public pressure, Chari said, “Security mechanism needs to be improved and citizens should be united for a strong and effective policy that concerned the security of the country and its people.”

Informing that India is starting to take the matter seriously, Chari, however, said that last year the government’s constituted the Naresh Chandra Committee Task Force on National Security Policy which has submitted its report that is yet to be made public. “People should participate once it is being place in the public domain,” he added.

The Forum for Integrated National Security have taken up a series of programmes ‘Sarhat Ko Pranam’ or ‘Salute to the Border’ engaging the youth to visit the different borders and highlight the various problems faced by the people and the jawans residing in the international borders. More than 10,000 youth from across the country have visited 469 out of 646 borders.

Chari said, “The whole concept of the programme is not to do any research but to collect information from all the borders besides educating and inculcating a sense of patriotism among the youth of the country.”

“The information collected by these youths would be submitted to the central as well as respective state governments,” Chari informed.  The forum in its findings has highlighted absence of proper ‘fencing’ as one of the main problem in the international border which led to easy accessible of infiltrators creating social problems. – By Our Reporter
