SHILLONG, OCT 1: The Greater Laban Community Development Society (GLCDS) has appealed to the ten pro ILP ngos to consider “exemption” of their agitations during different religious festivals including the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.
“We request the ten NGOs to consider ‘exempting’ all agitations during the different religious festivals,” GLCDS secretary A Marwein said in a letter the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) president Daniel Khyriem on Tuesday.
As per the letter, the society has urged for agitations to be exempted on October 10 to October 14, on account of the Durga Puja, October 16 – Id Ul Zuha, November 2 and 3 – Kali Puja, November 7 – Chat Puja, December 24 to January 1, 2014 – Christmas and New Year.
“This part of the year is very crucial for the students as well who would be appearing for their different examinations apart from all the people taking part in their respective religious festivals,” Marwein stated.
It may be mentioned here that the 10 ngos had sponsored series of agitational programmes during the past one month in protest against the state government’s refusal to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to curb illegal inflow of influx into the state.
The agitations including bandh, office picketing, road blockades started on September 4, ever since the talks between the government and the NGOs failed.
Meanwhile, the Central Puja Committee (CPC) also appealed to all section of the citizens of Meghalaya in general and Shillong in particular to cooperate in ensuring a smooth and peaceful celebration of Durga Puja, Diwali and Chatt Puja in the State.
The festival season shall commence with CPC’s annual All Faith – All Religion, “Get-Together of Harmony” on October 8 at Assom Kristi Kendra.- By Our Reporter
