SHILLONG, JUNE 12: The state government will soon bring necessary amendments to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Acts relating to salaries and pensions of the MLAS for the consideration of the assembly.

State parliamentary affairs minister Prestone Tynsong told the ongoing assembly on Thursday, “We are on the job to bring necessary amendments to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Salaries and Allowances Acts, 1972 and Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Pension Acts, 1977 for the approval of this august house.”

According to Tynsong the pensions and the salaries of the MLAs are guided by these two Acts.  He said, “We are working out on restructuring salaries and pensions for the MLAs.”

Tynsong assured the assembly that the state government at no point of time neglected the contribution made by ex-MLAs to the state and is already on the job to consider for the enhancement of the pension of ex-MLAs and their families.

Tynsong also informed that in 2011, the government had revised the salaries and pensions of the MLAs but added as the salary components of the MLAs is Rs 20,000; technically speaking the pensions cannot be enhanced to Rs 30,000.

Earlier, Garo National Council (GNC) legislator Clifford Marak while moving the resolution demanded the state government to enhance the pensions of ex-MLAs to Rs 30, 000 from Rs 13, 500 considering the contributions they made to the state.

According to Marak, the present amount paid to ex-MLAs with only Rs 13, 500 is too less making it difficult for ex-MLAs, as most of them are not businessmen, to run their families especially with problem of price rise. – By Our Reporter
