SHILLONG, MAR 3: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Thursday assured to take stern action against illegal settlers inside the Iewduh, which is one of the oldest traditional markets in the region, if the Hima Mylliem fails to comply with the direction of evacuating them.
Replying during question hour in the budget session, which concluded on Thursday, KHADC EM in-charge market Hadrian Lyngdoh said, “The executive committee will take stern action against the illegal settlers if the Hima Mylliem fails to evict them within one month time, which will expired on March 16.”
According to him, the Hima Mylliem was given the instruction after a joint inspection conducted with the KHADC in which it was found the Iewduh market has been converted into a residential area by illegal settlers.
“Most of these illegal settlers are non-tribals,” Lyngdoh said while pointing out that such practice is in violation against the rules and order passed by the District Council as well as the Hima Mylliem.
He, however, informed that the executive committee has decided to wait for the report from the Hima Mylliem on the issue.
“We will definitely sit as an executive committee to decide accordingly on the report to be submitted by the Hima,” Lyngdoh stated.
Earlier while raising concern over the issue, opposition HSPDP MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew also sought clarification from the EC whether the circular issued by the then ARPA led EC is still in operation with regards to the matters related to the Iewduh market.
On this, the EM in-charge market said that circular of the then EC issued to the Hima Mylliem is still effective till today.-By Our Reporter
