SHILLONG, FEB 4: The state cabinet on Wednesday decided to release financial assistance of Rs 6-7 crores by providing agricultural inputs and subsidy to farmers of the four districts whose agricultural land have been affected by ‘drought’.
“We have decided to release agricultural inputs and subsidy to farmers who are affected by drought in four districts as per reports,” Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo told reporters after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
As per the reports of last year during June, drought had affected certain areas of the four districts – East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills, Laloo informed.
“A total of 13.606.55 hectare of agricultural land has been affected in three districts including East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills, damage of crops have been reported. However in East Khasi hills, the damage of crop is nil,” Laloo said.
Laloo also informed that the government has estimated around Rs 6-7 crores to be release to the affected farmers as per the guidelines of the Disaster Relief Funds sanctioned for 2014-15.
“It was also instructed that the amount will be release directly in the bank accounts of the farmers,” Laloo said while adding that funds will be release depending upon the area affected by the drought.
The cabinet also approved the proposed amendment of the Meghalaya Soil and Conservation Service Rule for filling up of the vacancy to enable the department to draw officers from the engineering background.- By Our Reporter
