SHILLONG, MAY 19: Meghalaya high court chief justice Justice Uma Nath Singh flagged-off the Mobile Lok Adalat /Legal Services Van for delivering justice right at the doorstep of those that the justice system has not been able to reach now.

Justice Singh said that as of now the government has not been able to open the judicial institutions in some of the area only because there are no advocates.

Speaking during the flagging off, justice Singh said “Unless there is participation from the bar this is not going to succeed irrespective of the huge amount of money being spent.” He appealed to all concerned to come forward and participate in this movement to get justice at the doorstep of those who have been deprived so far.

Justice Singh was of the opinion that with the creation of legal awareness there will be generation of more and more litigations and people will be legally educated as there will be more educational institutions for law education and more public utility services.

Singh, who is also the Patron-in-Chief of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), also pointed out that the legal service authority can teach the area where under privilege people residing in the far off areas of Garo,Jaintia Hills and Khasi hills of the legal aspects as  they are hardly aware of their customs, customary laws, their legal rights and constitutional rights.

“You have customs, customary laws but you have no knowledge,” Justice Singh said while emphasizing the vital role the legal service authority can play on the issue of educating the people.

Soon after being flagged off, the Mobile Lok Adalat Van proceeded to different parts of Shillong for publicity campaign and distribution of pamphlets.

Highlighting more on the objective of the mobile court, Meghalaya high court judge Justice TNK Singh, who is also the Executive Chairman of MSLSA, said, “The mobile van is meant specifically for giving justice at the doorstep and settlement of disputes between parties. The legal mobile van can go and settle people’s problems at the doorsteps.”

Justice Singh informed that this initiative is being introduced by the National Legal Service Authority under the national legal service authority (legal Act Regulation, 2011). The mobile van is introduced under Regulation 21 of the Act.

The van will be operationalized in all the districts of Meghalaya.- By Our Reporter
