SHILLONG, NOV 1: One Ropeklien was arrested by the police for killing dogs and two dogs who are currently recovering from their ordeal were also rescued by from his residence. A local reported that dogs were being killed for meat by a man in the city.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India sprang into action to guide the whistleblower, to work with the Meghalaya police and Stray Animal Rescue Society (SARS) to stop the dog killer.

The action led to the arrest of Ropeklien.

An FIR was been registered by Tee Mawlong, co-founder of SARS, under Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and Section 11(1)(a), (d), (e), (l) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

The then Director General of Police (DGP) SK Jain appointed Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police (SP), Shillong City – crime as the nodal officer for this case and Danny Kharbani, the head constable from the crime branch for the operation.

Weapons like a knife, a sack with blood stains and a blow torch for fur removal were seized during a raid in the Madanrting at which point two dogs were also found. Locals allege the accused has a history of killing even up to ten dogs a week.

“We are thankful to the Meghalaya police for saving dogs’ lives. The two dogs that were rescued are lucky, but billions of animals who are killed every year to be eaten are not”, says PETA India’s emergency response coordinator Meet Ashar. “We hope this rescue will inspire more people to eat vegan,” he said.

Vegans are vegetarians who refrain from consuming any products derived from animals’ bodies. That’s because the consumption of meat, eggs and dairy foods is responsible for unimaginable animal suffering.-By Our Reporter
