SHILLONG, NOV 10: Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju on Thursday emphasized the need to develop scientific institutions in the north eastern region.
“We need to do much more to ensure that the NE region grows in term of scientific advancement,” Rijiju said while addressing the two-day Tenth Biennial National Conference of the Physics Academy of North East (PANE) at St Anthony’s College on Thursday.
He informed that he had discussed the issue with the Union Human Resource Development Minister about how to promote and how to support the region physically and financially in term of policy support.
“We need a close coordination between individual researchers, the institutions and the government and we need to come together,” he added.
He said the conference is the coming together of brains of the north east people which will be the power of the region to ensure nobody can deny its existence.
Asserting the need to make the research human friendly, Rijiju said it should be integrated with the way we live, the way we deal with our daily life otherwise it becomes irrational scientific research and sometimes may be destructive for our own human civilization.
“We really need to apply whole research for our own betterment for our own use,” he said while urging the students to inculcate more interest in the area of science particularly in physics.
Referring to the issue of discrimination faced by North East students and people, the union minister of state said, “I am taking serious steps to ensure that the NE students or people from the region are comfortable anywhere they go in any part of this country.”
However stating that sometime discrimination is not one sided it may happen there it happen here also, he said, “It is a societal tendency to ensure your people because this is your domain and you try to empower your people over other people and have dominance of your own, it happens… you don’t need to feel dejected or frustrated for that it happens in every part of society but we have to ensure that we have mechanism to tackle that.”-By Our Reporter
