SHILLONG, JUNE 3: The Khun Kynthei U Hynniewtrep Association (KKUHA) on Wednesday demanded for an ‘inquiry’ into the recent lathi-charge by police against women after a public meeting on the VA Bill.
“We would soon seek an audience with home minister Roshan Warjri, to demand for immediate inquiry into the matter,” KKUHA president R Jyrwa told newsmen at a press conference on Wednesday.
Condemning the action by the state police, Jyrwa said, “At least 30 women including mothers and youth were injured by the ‘unwarranted’ lathi charge executed indiscriminately by the police on that day.”
According to her, police are suppose to be protecting the public, especially women, but sadly the situation was just the opposite.
On May 29, several people mostly women were injured after police imposed lathi-charge against the crowd after a public meeting organized by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC).
Supporting the demand of the women’s body, Goldy Warjri, who had staged a 17 days hunger protest along with former KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum, said, “We expressed our concern on the attitude of the police against women.”
Warjri said that they want an inquiry into the matter to know who is responsible behind the law and order breakdown, the women as alleged or the police.- By Our Reporter
