SHILLONG, JULY 16: East Khasi hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar on Thursday assured he would write to the state government requesting for extension of the merit list of the eligible Gram Sevika candidates, who are currently on indefinite hunger strike for the past four days.
The assurance was given to a delegation of the aggrieved qualified Gram Sevika candidates and members of KHNAM-Youth Wing in during a meeting on Thursday.
However, the candidates expressed discontent over the assurance and decided to go back and continue their fast protest.
“The DC has assured us that he would take up the matter by writing to the state government on Monday next, with a request for considering granting extension to our merit list,” one of the aggrieved candidates, B Jyrwa told newsmen after the meeting.
She said, “He (DC) has also made it clear that it will all depend on the decision of the state government on the issue.”
Expressing dissatisfaction over the outcome, Jyrwa said, “Therefore, we decided that we would continue with our hunger strike till the government is ready to extend the validity of the merit list and ensure that all the eligible candidates get their appointments.”
The decision to stage the strike which started since July 13, was after the state government failed to consider re-extension of the merit list and instead contemplated to ‘re-advertise’ the posts of Gram Sevika in East Khasi Hills District.
The validity of the merit list for the post of Gram Sevika had already expired since August 21, 2013.
Only two people have been given appointment so far out of the 12 candidates (all are females) declared as successful by the district selection committee (DSC) of East Khasi Hills District on August 21, 2012.
However, two others have been appointed in other government departments after they appeared for the MPSC exams.
With this, a total of eight candidates are yet to get appointment till today.
Stating that there was no mentioning of the number of vacant posts in the advertisement, Jyrwa said, “The government has in fact violated its own order which directed all departments to clearly state the number of vacancy posts while advertising for the same.”
She questioned the government’s failure to extend the validity of the merit list of the Gram Sevika while granting the same to the Grade IV candidates, who according to her was absorbed in different government departments after government granted several extensions to their merit list.
Meanwhile, KHNAM – Youth Wing president Thomas Passah said that DC in the capacity of being the chairman of the DSC had agreed to extend all possible help within his power.
He (DC) had also informed that his office had earlier sent two letters on the issue but the response from the C&RD department was negative on both occasion,” Passah said.
He informed that KHNAM would soon seek the intervention of the C&RD minister Prestone Tynsong since it will be unfair on the part of the government to deprive the legitimate right to job of these candidates, who it has declared as eligible.- By Our Reporter
