SHILLONG, JUNE 29: The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) on Wednesday opposed the state government’s move to seek extension for outgoing Director General Police (DGP) Rajiv Mehta, who is set to retire tomorrow. In a statement i on Wednesday, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said, “Such move reflects badly on the State as it indicates there is no competent official better to take the place of DGP. This cannot be encouraged; as it spoils the chances of those who are to be next promoted.”
Demanding that the next in line DGP should immediately be appointed, Kharshiing also urged the legislators to strongly oppose such move of the government as many will be affected by this unconstitutional method.
“As representatives and legislators they should know that there should be no unjustified policy allowing extension of services of retired officials or staff of the Government, as this also drains the State of its exchequer,” she said.
According to her, service and Recruitment Rules should be adhered and violation of these means there is something going on, which could indicate either that the services of these people are still required to hide scams or some irregularity.
She also alleged that the ‘Meghalaya Service (Conduct) Rules, 1990″ of the State Government put up in the police website is wrongly giving the article of the Constitution, which is related to recruitment.
The Meghalaya Service (Conduct) Rules, 1990 put up in the first introductory lines mentions ” In exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to Article 300 of the Constitution of India,” when article 300 does not relate at all to recruitment and services but related to suit and proceedings.
Meanwhile, the CSWO also demanded that all extensions should be immediately put on hold and state finance department should stop payments for such extensions.-By Our Reporter
