SHILLONG, AUG 30: National Innovation in Climate Resilient Agriculture project (NICRA) is one of the major initiatives to combat the climate change and conduct research and demonstration on climate resilient agricultural technologies. The two days District Contingency Plan formulation workshop was organised to formulate and finalise district contingency plan of 25 pending districts of north Eastern Region which would be used by the respective district administration during any climate aberration. The workshop began today at ICAR Research Complex with participation of experts from CRIDA Hyderabad senior scientist and heads of 26 KVK’s attended the workshop. The day of the workshop witnessed a series of presentations. The brainstorming session held during the session lead to numerous innovative ideas to be taken forward and implemented.
The inaugural session began with the welcome address by Dr S. Hazarika Project In-charge NICRA ICAR, Umiam. Addressing the gathering he said that the meeting intends to completely chalk out the contingency plan and implement it at the earliest. Dr. K. V Rao, Convenor Agricultural Contingency Cell, ICAR-CRIDA, Hyderabad interacting with the participants said the contingency plan needs to focus on the drought, flood and other natural calamities. Agriculture and other allied departments of the state government shouldwork in collaboration to get the maximum output. Umiam speaking on the occasion stressed on the fact that it is evident that the climate is drastically changing and we need to find ways and means to cope with the changing climate and avert the adverse effects. As the region has diverse complex and risk prone conditions, the socio economic factor also need to be taken into consideration while formulating the contingency plan.
