SHILLONG, MAY 17: Opposition Congress in Meghalaya has decided to stage a protest on Friday against the “killing of democracy” by the BJP-led NDA government and governor of Karnataka.
The Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala had invited the BJP, the single-largest party to form a government in the state and this was seen as a blatant partisan and authoritarian act on his part.
Sources in the Congress informed that all MLAs and MDCs of the party besides district and block presidents and members of the frontal wings will attend the dharna to be held at the Congress Bhavan tomorrow.
On whether the party would demand the Meghalaya governor Ganga Prasad to invite them to stake claim is yet to be known as the MPCC chief Celestine Lyngdoh was not available for his comment on the matter.
It may be mentioned here, the Congress was the single largest party in the February 27 Assembly elections when it got 21 seats while the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) won only in 19 seats.
However, opposition parties in other states like Goa, Bihar, and Manipur are demanding that their respective governors should invite them to stake claim to the government as they were the single-largest parties in last assembly polls held in these states.
