Shillong, Oct 4: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma emphasized on need to get the support of the community in policing which he feels will have a multiplying effects of the police in fighting and controlling crimes.
Addressing the two-day Superintendents of Police & Commandants (SP/CO) conference held in the Police Head Quarters Thursday Sangma said, “The Community participation in policing has a force multiplying effect on the efforts of the police.
All the eleven districts Superintendents of Police and six Commandants of the Meghalaya Battalions attended the conference. Meghalaya DGP N Ramachandran chaired the meeting.
Sangma highlighted the importance of eliciting community cooperation in policing even as he emphasized the need for secure police housing complexes for the police families to reside in these complexes when the police personnel are posted out from that place. He informed that these proposed complexes would have all the basic facilities such as shopping complex, hospitals, schools and conveyance.
According to Sangma initially, two such police housing complexes would be constructed in South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills districts at a cost of Rs 30 crore each. He said necessary funds are being sponsored by DONER.
Sangma has also flagged off the police patrol vehicles for Shillong and Tura. Five of these patrol vehicles are meant for the Shillong city and the two are meant for the Tura town. These patrol vehicles will remain on round the clock duty and attend to all the emergency calls from the public.
The SPs of East Khasi Hill, West Garo Hills district would be monitoring their functioning, attentiveness and supervise their deployment for the larger benefit of the people.
Sangma also flagged off two anti-human trafficking vehicles meant for the anti-human trafficking units established in Shillong and Tura. The main functions of these two units would be to track the human traffickers and to rescue any victims of human trafficking. These units would be sharing their contact numbers with the citizens for timely passing on reliable information about all suspected incidents of human trafficking.
During the deliberations, the district SPs presented the prevailing crime scenario in their respective districts, made presentations on the preparation for the forthcoming assembly elections in the State.- By Our Reporter
