Ardent calls UDP “unstable”, “dictatorial”

Shillong,Nov 22: Suspended United Democratic Party (UDP) Nongkrem legislator Adent Basaiawmoit stuck to his demand and asserted that he would not apply for the party ticket till the party decides not to allot ticket to non-tribal candidates for contesting the 2013 assembly election.

Basaiawmoit has been vocal in his opposition to the party’s decision of allotting party ticket to a nontribal for the Rajabala constituency in Garo hills.  His contention is that the UDP has violated the very principal and ideology of being a regional party in the state by allotting party ticket to a non-indigenous candidate.

Basaiawmoit has been speaking against the party decision to allot ticket to a non-tribal in public and had not applied for the UDP ticket even after the last date for doing so had expired.

The UDP parliamentary board had suspended him for his anti-party activities but said that they would revoke the suspension if he gives explanation as to why he should not be suspended.

But the unrepentant and vocal legislators questioned as how the UDP can equate a non-indigenous candidate with local indigenous people. He said, “Non-tribal is non-tribal.” Expressing unhappiness at the present leadership of the UDP , Basawmoit said, “I do not subscribe to the manner the leaders are functioning as the party is no more a democratic party but rather an “unstable” and “dictatorial” party.”

Sending out challenge to the UDP, Basaiawmoit said, “I am waiting for the UDP leadership to accept my offer to have a debate on the ideology and philosophy of the party.”  He said the party has betrayed the people and it can no longer claimed itself as a regional party as it has failed to live up to the aspiration of the people.

Turning the heat on his party Basaiawmoit said that the UDP should justify calling his actions anti party. – By Our Reporter
