Coal transported as cement

SHILLONG, NOV 12: The West Jaintia hills district administration on Wednesday revealed that there are trucks who manage to illegally transport coal by disguising as cement carrying trucks even as it directed the police to tighten vigil and intensify checking to prevent any violation against the NGT order.

“Some trucks are transporting cement from Khliehriat (East Jaintia Hills) towards Shillong  and in doing so the trucks use tarpaulin to cover the truck’s body. Taking advantage of this situation, some truckers and drivers falsely declared their mercantile load as cement instead of the actual mercantile being transported,”  West Jaintia hills district magistrate DM Wahlang said in an order issued on Wednesday.

Wahlang said in the process some truckers did manage to illegally transport coal in violation of the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). In order to ensure that the NGT order is not violated in any way, the district magistrate has issued a six point directions to the police to conduct proper checking on all trucks.

“No trucks transporting cement should cross the district without proper papers from competent authorities. They also should not cover their vehicles with tarpaulin,” Wahlang said in the prohibitory order.

Wahlang directed that the police officer on duty shall ensure that no trucks transporting cement not possessing of valid and authorized permission issued by the competent authority is allowed to cross West Jaintia hills. In such cases FIR shall be filed by the police officer on duty.

“The police on duty shall record all such documents being produced by the transporters and a report shall be submitted to the SP on a daily basis. The report shall contain the name of the trader, the driver, the vehicle number and the driving license of the driver,” the order said.

The order further directed the police to remove any tarpaulin or any kind of covering material being used to cover the body of the truck and if found that the NGT order is violated; a case shall be registered against the driver, the vehicle owner and the trader.

The order directed the SP to take necessary action to ensure strict compliance of this order and a daily report on the status of the enforcement of this order shall be submitted by the SP on a daily basis.

Official sources further revealed that in the past one month at least 20 persons were arrested in the state for illegally transporting coal from East and West Jaintia hills districts in violation of the NGT order.- By Our Reporter
