SHILLONG, FEB 4: Chief minister Mukul Sangma has ruled a CBI inquiry into the death of the officer in charge of Patharkhmah police station unless there are indications of doubt leading to his death investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police.
“Immediately after receiving information on the incident, the order for an independent inquiry has been given,” Sangma said told reporters at the sideline of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Sangma informed that the SIT will be supervised by one of the senior police officer Vivek Syiem SP (city) of the East Khasi hills district under the overall supervision of the senior officer H Marbaniang of CID.
“The SIT has been given 90 days to complete the investigation,” Sangma informed.
The SIT was notified by the police headquarters after it decided to registered a murder case into death of Sub Inspector PJ Marbaniang, who was the in charge of Patharkhmah police outpost in Ri Bhoi district.
On January 24, Marbaniang was found critically injured with a gunshot on his head in his official quarter, a day after detaining several illegal coal trucks.
Earlier, police had claimed that Marbaniang, had allegedly shot himself with his service revolver and it is clear case of suicide.
Following the contradictions in the certificates issued by different hospitals into his death, this has prompted many including the bereaved family members to demand for an independent inquiry by the CBI into the mysterious death of Marbaniang.
Admitting that there are several version of the police officer death, Sangma however, “But we must trust the officers of who have been entrusted with the responsibility of investigation.” He said the government has all along depended on many officers whose integrities are unquestionable.
Sangma felt that it will not be appropriate to presume and question the investigation that will be initiated by SIT and also the integrity and commitment of the officers who will be heading it. – By Our Reporter
