Tura, Oct 16: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma launched the Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign Movement Tuesday in a function organised by the West Garo Hills District Administration in collaboration with the department of Sports and Youth Affairs at Tura Chandmary playground.

Earlier in the morning a green marathon held for youth of different age groups was flagged off by Sangma from the same venue. The marathon was followed by a green walk participated by young and old alike which was led by Sangma accompanied by his wife Dikkanchi D Shira.

The launch of the movement coincided with the World Food Day celebrations and later in the day Sangma inaugurated the World Food Day celebration themed ‘Agricultural Cooperatives – Key to feeding the world’ organised by the Agriculture Department at Chandmary playground.

Addressing the gathering Sangma said that the Youth for green campaign was not merely a campaign but a movement to strive for cleanliness in the localities, market areas, villages, towns and rivers. The Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign Movement, is an endeavor to rope in the youth to generate, evoke and create mass awareness among all members of public to keep the environment clean, he informed.

Sangma stated that to achieve this objective the state government in collaboration with concerned stakeholders like schools, colleges, registered societies and NGOs who are willing and interested to promote cleanliness has chalked out programmes and constituted district committees, work out detailed strategies and prepare an action plan with special focus on the involvement of the youth in the exercise so that cleanliness becomes habitual and institutionalized by one and all in the years to come in the state as a whole.

Stressing on the importance of participation by the youths, Sangma urged the elders of the society to set right examples on cleanliness so that the younger generation can emulate it and pass it on to others.

Sangma talked at length on the Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood programme and said that the youth for green campaign movement complimented the IBDLP as it aimed at promoting optimal and effective development within a sustainability framework while focusing on efficient conservation and preservation of natural resources especially water.

Speaking on pollution, Sangma said that though Meghalaya could still withstand the onslaught of man induced environmental degradation it was time for the youths of the region to shoulder the responsibility of preserving and conserving the environment. He later suggested that in order to reduce pollution and inculcate healthy habits a day should be designated each month for the people of Tura to abstain from using their vehicles and instead walk to their respective educational institutions, business establishments and government offices.

Sangma  later distributed certificates and prizes to the winners of the green marathon and visited the stalls erected at the venue for the World Food Day Celebrations.

Others who spoke at the gathering were former minister Miriam D Shira, State Planning Board Co Chairman, Zenith M Sangma, Meghalaya Employment Generation Resources Council Co Chairman Billy Kid A Sangma, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ambrose Ch Marak and Tura Municipal Board CEO T G Momin. – By Our Reporter
