SHILLONG, JULY 4: Fifteen minutes after newly appointed AICC general secretary CP Joshi arrived at Pinewood hotel at 8.15 pm, Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Coordination Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang and other ministers met him in his room.
The meeting of the state Congress leaders with the AICC is being described as a ‘courtesy call’ as none are willing to divulge the nature of informal talks they have had with Joshi who is visiting the state for the first time after his appointment as the AICC in-charge of Meghalaya.
Besides, Mukul and Lapang, the ministers who met Joshi are Home Minister Roshan Warjri, PWD minister Sngewbhalang Dhar, Social Welfare minister Deborah Marak, C&RD minister Prestone Tyngsong and some party functionaries.
The arrival of Joshi on Monday comes days after the reported ‘internal rift’ within the Congress over the issue of leadership change has reportedly been neutralized. The state Congress party leaders said that there will be a party meeting on Tuesday at around 11 am to discuss various issues including reasons for Congress Tura debacle and other party matters.
However, a minister on condition of anonymity said that though there are no indications of talks for leadership change, but you ‘never know that there might me someone like a minister, MLA or even MDC who might touch on this touchy issue at their level if there is one to one meeting with Joshi.
Otherwise, the talks and discussions will revolve around the upcoming 2018 state assembly elections, strengthening the party apparatus, avoiding internal party rift that will give its political opponent an upper hand during elections and other issues.
Joshi in the meantime told reporters that he expects that the Congress will do well in the state assembly polls in 2018 by winning more seats as it will be using all diplomatic channels to win the voters trust.-By Our Reporter
