SHILLONG, AUG 5: Meghalaya labour minister Ampareen Lyngdoh claimed that child labour in the state has reduced substantially because of stringent action taken by the government and also because of the people’s realization that is unlawful to engage children in hazardous profession.
Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday that people though late but those employing minors realized that it is against the law. She informed that government also initiated action against the employers who employed children.
Lyngdoh asserted,“We will not accept any excuse for employing of children.”
The state labour department was castigated by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) earlier as the department does not have concrete data about the number of children who have been employed in the coal mines of Jaintia Hills.
According to Lyngdoh, different organizations who have carried out the child survey have given different results on the child labour in the coal mines.
Lyngdoh said that the state labour department along with IIM Shilong would conduct a detailed survey to get a specific data of child labour in the coal mines of Jaintia Hills.
The State Government is working out different modalities of conducting the survey,” Lyngdoh informed.
Lyngdoh believed that the neighbours, whistle blowers and traditional institutions can play a major role in eliminating the menace of child labour from the coal mines of Jaintia Hills. – By Our Reporter
