Centre on mission to nurture sport talents

SHILLONG, APR 25: To nurture talented youths, the union government has proposed to set up district level sports schools (DLSS) in every district in the country including the north eastern states.

Dr GSG Ayyangar, joint secretary (development) Departments of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports said, “Under the scheme for identifying and nurturing sports talents, district level sports schools have been proposed in every district in the country in the next ten years,”.

Dr Ayyangar was addressing the North Eastern Regional Workshop on implementation of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) and Review meeting on Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) organized by Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and hosted by Meghalaya government in the Shillong on Friday.

Dr Ayyangar informed that these schools will be set up on PPP mode except in remote and disturb area adding  in such districts, the existing Navodaya schools are proposed to be upgraded, where new institutions are not possible to be set up.

“However, if Navodaya schools do not exist or cannot become DLSS, the funding will be done from the existing schemes of the government,” Dr Ayyangar said while informing that the investment proposed for each school is estimated at a cost of Rs 28 – Rs 30 crores.

Dr Ayyangar also informed that the administrative control of these schools will be vested with the Ministry Human Resource Development (MHRD) while the Ministry of Sports will supervise the training in sports and provide sports scholarships and the recurring expenses.

“The budgets of ministries like HRD, Home, rural development, doner will be suitable enhance. Operating costs for such schools will be borne by the central, state government or private partners,” Dr Ayyangar added.

100 talented students in the 6-14 age group will be identified through the RGKA competitions after which they will be given admission in the DLSS and will be provided with allowances for maintenance, diet and sports kit, Dr Ayyangar informed.

Dr Ayyangar said these young talents will participate in the special training programmes designed for them and the talented youth will be assigned specific disciplines through a scientific process of determination.

Stating that through a rigorous training programme and participation young talents will be identified for Centre for Excellence (CE), Dr Ayyangar said 25 CE will be set up.

Dr Ayyangar informed that the existing Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centres will be upgraded and 13 new centres will be developed and funded by SAI. However, land for such centres will have to be provided by the state government.

Dr Ayyagar said,  “The young talents who excel will be treated as high performers and given admission at the CE. Each of the high performers will also be enrolled in nearby schools, colleges, polytechnics…”

Dr Ayyangar is also schedule to conduct an inspection of the SAI centre at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) later in the evening.- By Our Reporter
