SHILLONG, JAN 19: The District Magistrate and District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills and District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills, have promulgated an Order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any person or group of persons from carrying money above Rs. 50,000/- only in the respective Districts. This order comes into effect immediately and shall remain in force till the completion of poll procedure.
This order is necessitated following the information that some persons are likely to carry large amount of hard cash to bribe the voters for casting their votes in favour of a particular candidate. The District Magistrates are also satisfied that such action, if allowed, would affect the conduct of free and fair election to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly 2018 and is likely to cause frustration, quarrel and fights between members of the public leading to law and order problem, breach of peace and tranquillity, leading to loss of life and property.
It may be mentioned that the Election Commission of India has announced the General Election to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, 2018 which will be held in the State on the 27th February, 2018. Following the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct and other instructions of the Election Commission have become operative in the State. The Election Commission also directs to check bribery of voters during the conduct of any election and ensure that voters exercise their franchise freely and fairly without fear or inducement.
